Ruth de Boer, product manager for treatment delivery at Nucletron – an Elekta company's Brachytherapy division, introduced the new Flexitron Cobalt-60 afterloader. Flexitron emphasizes safety and efficiency in the brachytherapy workflow, increasing the clinician's confidence that execution of all workflow steps will proceed as planned for brachytherapy treatment delivery. A variety of clinical topics was reviewed at the conference. The new approach in gynecologic brachytherapy, Image-Guided Brachytherapy, was discussed. This innovative approach aims to bring benefits to the patient in terms of treatment precision and has been implemented by various brachytherapy clinics in India. Image-guided brachytherapy allows for delivery of a higher dose to the target tissue, adding to increased local control rates, and a reduced dose to the surrounding tissue and organs-at-risk, reducing the occurrence of side-effects. A live clinical case provided the conference delegates with good insight in the clinical application of head and neck brachytherapy. In addition, presentations on brachytherapy for breast, oesophagus, prostate and physics planning provided more insight and useful practical details. Finally, the topic 'Economics of Brachytherapy' lead to a very lively discussion, showing that also in India the focus on healthcare budgets is top of mind. | | | | |
